What about a 9mm upper? Cheaper then .300 and I think most .30 cal cans will shoot 9mm. But I may be wrong. Honestly I'm just living vicariously through other people's rifles at this point so feel free to ignore my random ideas.

Probably not what your looking for but my dream SBR would be one of the glock mag lowers. A 9mm glock mag fed SBR would make me so happy. I know you can't swap out uppers doing that but I still think it would be badass.

Do you plan on using it for cheaper training to supplement a centerfire 1911 or just for a good host? If it's just a range toy I'd look at a ruger mkiii and have known quality and reliability

This will be my go to rifle so I don't mind spending enough to get a PRO, the higher end ones are too far out of my budget and overkill for what I need I think. Hopefully I'll get a .22 AR and that will probably get a less expensive optic like a primary arms.
