I will give credit to the German BMW 3.0 inline 6. It's tried and true. Benz also Had a great inline diesel.

Yes, if you stay away from the forced induction motors they’re bullet proof, the only negative is older VANOS and the electric water pumps

Yeah. Again, if one sticks to the naturally aspirated non M cars, they’re quite reliable.
although a M2 is my dream sports car for the money. Gosh those are amazing
