Great grandfather:

Grandfather:

Grandmother:

So apparently the family tree has a LOT of branches going back at least a few generations. The obits provide some insight to the times. Grandparents both passed early from cancer, Great-grandfather died an early death as well but I'm not sure what from.

Albatros if you're able to do some research, it can get interesting. Not sure your family history...for me, I prefer to stand on the outside looking in. But I feel like I need to have the path to show my son if he ever wants to look into it when he's of age.
There's a small memorial in Germany with a bunch of my family members' names on it. All the death dates are 1939-1945, 1941, and 1945. Pretty grim stuff. The 1941 date is for a relative that flew a Heinkel He 111 in Spain, Poland, France, Britain, and Soviet Union as part of KG 27 Boelcke.

I think it's interesting how my great-grandfather's nickname was Shine, because he was always smiling and happy. You know how they say things skip generations...my dad and I didn't get that happy gene apparently but I definitely see it in my son. I wish I could be like that but I'm not wired up that way.

Then again...mine and his upbringing probably stifled that. Could have something to do with it lol

Any urge to visit the memorial?

My mom was the youngest of 9 and I know practically nothing about any of them.

Same basically. My mom has (had) 6 or 7 brothers and sisters. I've met one aunt, 2 cousins and my grandmother. If I could go back in time, I'd have spent more time getting to know them. But as it stands, I know nothing about any of them also.

I think it would be nice to visit just to satisfy my own curiosity. I've never actually been to Germany, so that's on the bucket list.

I was in West Germany from 1980-1983 as a kid and I have great memories of it. I'd love to go back and take my wife with me, I'm just afraid that so much of it has changed for the worse. But the geography/landscape/architecture/food has to still be the same and that stuff is awesome!

I just learned about this place last night:

If folks would educate themselves on the Soviet system, they'd understand why a lot of stuff happened.

I suppose the cities have changed a lot, but if you get out into the countryside, it's probably more or less the same. Probably not a whole lot going on in Lower Saxony. Besides checking out some of the historical stuff, I'd probably be feeding my face for most of the trip if I were to go. I grew up with a lot of Deutsche Küche so it'd be nice to experience some of that again.
I think it would be pretty good to check out some of the WWI battlefields in France too.
There's a lot of places that I feel like are worth checking out.
