as an update, i bought a used winchester 1300 in 20 gauge for what i consider to be a good price. i decided on the 20 vs a 12 because it should be manageable for my wife too if she so chooses. i also don't think there's that much of a difference from close-in work with 12 gauge vs 20 gauge...
