Couple of things that can cause this:

• Age - they will lay less as they get older, once they hit a few years old they won't lay everyday
• Broody - If they are broody they won't lay since they are focused on hatching
• Major environment changes -
  • Did he move where their coop was located or get a new coop?
  • Did he add more birds to his flock?
• Sickness - has he noticed any bloody poop or behavioral changes? They won't lay if they are sick

The most likely reason is the big shift towards cooler weather IMO. Chickens like consistency and dropping from the 90's to the 50's can sort of shock their system, mine have laid way less the last two days.

I’m not a chicken expert but besides what you mentioned it also depends on the breed. Some lay year round, even in cold weather.

We had chickens and bees when I was growing up. Will get back into that when I’m older and have more time. Very rewarding especially these days with all the processed junk sold in stores.
My brother in law has chickens and bees and I tease him that he’s a bored old man since he wakes up 30mins before sunrise and tends to the chickens and bees and nothing will distract him during that time, no phone calls, but I‘ll probably do the same in 10-15 years
