He might want to look into an AK, or something else in a different caliber unless he wants to pay .70/round for ammo. Just a thought.

Had a friend in the same boat. He got the ruger ar 556. It's basic but solid and has a CHF barrel as well. $700 ish is the going rate.
That's cheap considering the price of ammo.
