What's the best method of removing crud from the crown? I've tried flaking it off with a penny before, but it's not a perfect remedy.

I just soak it in hoppes like that upside down then hit it with a brass brush till it’s “good enough” I go easy around crowns

If it is chromed barrel, the edge of the cleaning kit body, lightly. Same for the piston, with more pressure. That's what I was taught. I soak them in solvent first. I scrub with a cloth right by the rifling. Take the worst off and call it good.
