I am not what you would call an AR platform operator...

Yeah I was issued a M16a2 in the Corps, and also carried one for a while in Syria. However I generally preferred to use indigenous weapons platforms.

So my question is....

Do I have have my red dot too far forward?

I shoot both eyes open and sight picture is fine. It's zeroed for 50m.

As vain as it sounds on Saturday I am going to be shooting with some guys that almost exclusively run AR platform with RDS and I don't want to be laughed at for incompetence.

However since I have a Binary Trigger installed, I think that I might gain some cool points for my double taps on multiple targets.

Unfortunately I am running a tube with pad for now. My brace is supposed to be here tomorrow, but with the way USPS has been fucking up lately, it probably won't arrive till Saturday after I have left to go to the range.

I'd mount that red dot almost as far back as you can

Lol, maybe getting high would have helped.
Everyone was smoking weed at the Bon Jovi concert but I can’t stand the smell of weed.
It was so lame and gay compared to other concerts I went to (AC/DC, NIN, Nirvana, etc)
I despise BonJovi, but if you’ve never heard of Phil X, look him up.
He’s BJ’s lead guitar, and is an amazing musician.
Guess he’s gotta eat somehow...

I’ve always mounted mine as far forward on the upper, but not on the forearm. That doesn’t make me right though.

I would personally move it back onto the upper receiver. For one it’s a more bomb proof section of Pic as opposed to a rail that can rotate or shift under extreme situations.
The farther forward the dot (to an extent) typically the faster it will enter into your field of view.
If you look on the left side of your receiver where the BCG cam recesses when the bolt is closed there’s a line that’s used For the forging process. I typically position my red dots forward on the upper receiver but not all the way onto the rail and usually they end up centered on that line with 1/2 T marks left open depending on the size of the dot or the size of the mount

Personal preference on that though, but it’s the way I’ve always shot.
I found It’s a good balance between a nice field of view and fast acquisition for me.

It may just be the optic but when I mount it to the rear like that the frame bisected my vision leaving me a 6 inch blind spot at 100m

Maybe because I am used to shooting pistols with an RDS I am more comfortable viewing the optic at a distance. I wish I could put a c-more slide ride on the end of the AR but I don't have one anymore.

I keep mine at the front part of the upper like so

Sometimes a little further back. Depends how I feel and what works

I would avoid mounting on the rail portion because I have experienced them coming loose if I didn't check and recheck them though the day

I moved it to the receiver. It's only a couple of inches, so I probably can deal with it.

Thanks for the advice yall.

Also @Rabbit2047 if you find you like your dot pushed even a bit farther, but want to avoid mounting on the rail you can go with a cantilevered optic mount that secures on the upper but pushes the dot a bit forward.

helps with optics that have a longer body like the Aimpoint or Strikefire type “tubes”. Kept the optic weight centered on the rifle but pushes the tube a bit farther up where I like it. Also helps a lot if you decided to run a flip-to-side magnifier on said optic because of your eye relief for the magnifier and losing real estate on the upper for mounting (with BUIS, magnifier, 30mm type red dot etc)
