Deployed from Colorado (FT Carson) to Anchorage (Elmendorf AFB) on a C-5. Unloaded the Helos, then flew north the Wainwright. Started out doing the mil exercise thing, transitioned to emergency aid ops getting frozen soldiers out of the field and checking on isolated locals. The Canadians crashed a C-130 on Wainwright during week 2. First plane made it and the heat from the engines caused ice fog to drop the visibility to zero while the second 130 was on final. Crashed short of the runway, killed 9.

A remote outpost of a store halfway between Anchorage and Fairbanks on George Parks Highway. Sold Mo Gas and Jet Fuel and Moose Meat. Just land and taxi up to the pump, lol.

Had this big ass abandoned igloo hotel (contaminated with asbestos they said) you could see for miles from the air.

Driven past the igloo several times. You really get to know your gas stations along the highway. Fill up when you can, price be damned.
Should look thru and post my AK pics. Many need to be scanned. Taken with an old Pentax, and then PAS Minolta.

Heard of Hanes. Warmer than yhe rest of the state, benefits from being on the Panhandle.
Next time u go, take a ferry out of Bellingham, WA. Straight shot to Hanes via Inside Passage, AK cruise for cheap.

Yep, I know where Haines is....Just North of Juneau. I have flown right over the top of the city making my way into Juneau. That long fjord that runs from Haines into Juneau...what beautiful country!

I had a chat yesterday, again, with the wife about moving back to AK in a few years (to earn more for my pension); she is afraid of snow for 9 months. I always wanted to move back to ANC, but SE AK would not be bad. Warmer, and flights from Juneau to Anc are not too expensive.

I went to Haines in the summer and the weather was great, its like a rainforest there or something in the summer time. So much vegetation in the woods, its crazy. Can't really explain Alaska you just have to go see it for yourself. Only down part is the isolationism but if you are okay with that then its a awesome place to go or live.

If I ever got considered to be Secret Service......I’ll pack my shit and go wherever they tell me. If that’s the moon I’m gonna fucking try to get there lmao

I have a nephew in-law - he went to OCS after jumping out of an airplane wrong in the Army. Worked his way up to some kind of investigator...now he guards folks like the Secretary of State, top brass in the Middle East, all kinds of assignments. He gets on a plane, gun stays on his side. Pretty cool.
A buddy of mine served 20 in the Corps, then went straight to FBI. Uses his experience in the ME as a terrorism/bomb trainer, among other duties. Travels all over the US.

I know it sounds like I'm stuck on "go into the service" - but that really is the best way to get a leg up into some jobs.
