An actual, thoughtful response...I knew I liked you.

I like the idea that 308 can do just about anything. However, some Mk262 from a 20" or even 16" barrel can probably do 90% of what 308 can do inside 350m...which is probably max distance.

3-4k of 55gr 5.56 and another 2-3k of Mk262 is a pretty good chunk of heat...

Just to be honist I have both 223/556 and 7.62x39 in mass quainty and I still go to my AR platform for home defense.
Not because 556/223 is better than 7.62x39 but because I can get a Reliable AR for 400.00 and if it needs to be taken after a home invasion by the cops I am not out a ton of money and the rounds are plenty available.

I don't think I could only have the poodle shooting cartridge without a battle rifle round.

I could, just wouldn't want to.

And dude, if you are talking about loading up on ammo right now you could NOT have picked a worse time!

Army qualifies out to 300Y with 5.56. Marines qualify out to 500Y. Not sure the lethality of the round at those distances but I wouldn't want to get hit with it.

Shooting anything at that distance is going to be more heavily reliant on the operator and the equipment and less on the caliber IMO.

@Jds556762 and a few others can probably give some real life examples of what a few different calibers can do at those distances. Not sure he's willing to put it out here, but if so, I'd like to hear it as well...

Qualified in army (obviously) but never shot anyone. But I can tell you what all kinds of calibers from 22lr-7.62x39 do at close range. Like point blank to 10 yards. See some intriguing stuff at work as far as shootings
