    A safety check.... or two

I use standard and magnum primers - even more to get mixed up if one goofs.

    Wingmaster stock and fore-end

Do you do any work with checkering? My son does. He learned how to do checkering from scratch with totally manual tools and does a really great job at it. I'd suspect that with the tools he uses one could clean up existing checkering very nicely when stripping a stock to refinish it.

Those are looking really nice right now. I can only imagine what a more loving touch will do to them. ;)

    A safety check.... or two

This stuff reminds me of what my Grandpa taught me back around 1960 (I was 13 then) when he was getting me comfortable working in the wood shop - measure twice, cut once. It's all about concentrating on what you're doing.

    A safety check.... or two

I was loading a couple hundred rounds of .223 rifle ammo the other day, and when I was done putting the bullets into a group of 50 cartridges I could not remember if I had done a visual check of all the cartridges to see that I had filled them properly with powder before seating the bullets...

    Any savings on reloading?

Reloading for the firearms you shoot is much like developing and printing the photos you make with a camera. They both add another whole dimension to each of the hobbies. I'm thinking primarily of processing film (in a "wet" darkroom) but digital post-processing get the same results for a...

    Mixed round type loading

Very good, Ray. I guess what threw me the most was the VIP abbreviation. I understand fully now. Thanks.

    Mixed round type loading

I'm not sure what ya meant by that, Ray. Anyhoo, I've measured the velocity of a number of different commercial "target only" and "self defense" loads as well as my own loads. I have found that the measured velocities of cheaper "target only" loads such as Winchester "White Box" (WWB) vary all...

    Mixed round type loading

I agree 100% with Ray. Using full metal jacket (FMJ) rounds, especially the round-nosed versions, for self-defense is dangerous to people who could be beyond the target. FMJ rounds are much more likely to completely penetrate a live target than expanding rounds. The great majority of FMJ...

    Any savings on reloading?

While I would not use handloaded ammunition for self-defense (carry) use, I definitely would use my handloaded ammunition for hunting. There are two basic benefits that can be achieved by handloading ammunition. One is the financial savings that can be achieved. The other is the potential...

    Held a Ruger 1911..

I find it amazing how many places that depend on sales hire - and often keep - the wrong people to do the selling.

    Grease/oil frequency

Since I started working on my AR-15, I learned about Slip 2000 gun oil and also Slip 2000 EWL (Extreme Weapons Lubricant). These two work better than most "gun oil" products for lubrication of firearms that take a beating. I've also found, though, that a lot of really experienced AR-15 owners...

    Adding Utah (non-resident) permit

I did the same thing as you. I sent in the Florida request the same day as I sent in the Utah request. The instructor had fingerprint cards and equipment as well as all the forms, etc., for both states.

    Adding Utah (non-resident) permit

I'll just have to lock the weapons and ammo up separately and inaccessible from the passenger area when going through Illinois. In addition, I'll be praying that I don't have a breakdown, get into a wreck, or have to overnight in Illinois. Unfortunately, Illinois is in the way for most trips...

    Adding Utah (non-resident) permit

I just received my non-resident Utah Concealed Firearm Permit. Today is 47 days after the day I put the application in the mail. 'Tis a great pre-Christmas present. I'm still waiting for the non-resident Florida permit to arrive. They suggested expecting a 90 day turnaround.

    Winchester 94 help

I don't bother with the plastic or rawhide mallet, but I use either a brass or a nylon punch between a small steel hammer and the sights. The real trick to simplifying the job is supporting the barrel solidly. For that, you might consider drilling a hole that's roughly the barrel diameter...
