.308 can load whatever grain bullet you need
16 inches of barrel, threaded for suppressor
box fed mags
bolt action reliability (they will still work long after you shoot out your damn barrell)
have a choice of optic mounting (should you want it, they do come with irons built in)
fully loaded right around 9lbs (maybe my scale is off, but that is what it said, no scope)

i know i am gonna get shit for it, but i said it anyway.

Well, what do you consider a "survival rifle"?

Are you thinking an M60 machine gun or are you thinking a suppressed .22lr bolt action?

I have an older Savage model 24, an over/under in 22 mag/.410. I like it because it is lightweight and breaks down to fit into a pack, but I'm not sure if the calibers are ideal. I'd love a 22mag/20 ga, but I don't think that combo was ever produced. Regardless, it is versatile tool for hunting small and medium sized game. It would not be ideal in a 'self defense survival' situation. For that I'd choose a 20 ga pump.

.223 is plenty for hunting and social work. You can pack at least twice the ammo compared to .308 for the same size and weight.

what type of threats? what type of hunting?

if the first is minimal...I like a pump action 12 ga...mossy 500 / remy 870 / winny 1300.

if the first is more aggressive, I like AR or AK.

Ruger 10/22 or a good lightweight bolt gun like a Savage FV-SR.
These are a must have for every shooter. Love them both and shoot them every chance I get.

The H&R survival rifle is nice too.
