I'd waste the dog in that situation....what that substitute teacher taught us back in middle school would come in handy. His lecture on ww2 began with the best way to neutralize an attacking dog from ther germans was to ball your fist and hammer strike the dog right at the base of its snout, hopefully hard enough to break it off.
