noob question. I’ve never changed hand guards on an ak but looking at lower HG and want to know, is there hardware I need for it or do I just swap them out. If that makes sense.

Use screwdriver's slot from the cleaning kit to mover the locking lever on the HG retainer.
Rear of the new HG might need to be fitted to the receiver. It needs to be TIGHT.
