I went to my car at lunch one day and realized I had my 1911 and 4 extra mags in the door pocket. I went back inside and told my supervisor I needed to leave ASAP. I knew there wasn't a roadblock between me and the gate at that moment but they might have decided to do one before I got off work. I wasn't going to chance it.
Contractors rarely get checked, especially at Benning 15+ years ago when I had a crew there. Maybe things have changed, but probably not since it’s still common to see cool stuff for sale in the Columbus area.

Nothing with a blade longer than 3"

No machetes, axes, survival knives, guns, non-lethal weapons either. No BB guns.

It is funny how things change.
I worked for Evergreen Airlines as a mechanic back in 2004-2005 we were hauling military freight on 747's.
I would drive a rental car onto Charleston, Dover and Norfolk among others in a rental car or van with just a DOD card and an Evergreen ID Badge no questions asked and no searches.
I would go from the front gate to the flight line, check in and get a little magnetic cone for the roof of the vehicle and drive straight out on the ramp.
If I needed help changing a tire or getting O2 to service the bottles I would drive around and find a GI and offer them $200.00-500.00 to help me depending on what the job was. I made a lot of friends on the base and never had to look to far for help.
