I recently got a letter from tag place saying my insurance lapsed and my registration will expire in 30 days. It was a error on their part maybe your registration expire?

Yep, that's exactly how it works. If your insurance lapses the insurance company must wait 30 days prior to reporting it to the state. The state then notifies you via mail that your registration will be revoked in 30 days if no insurance is obtained. In the mean time if you are stopped and the tag check shows no insurance and you have no proof (current card) you will be issued a citation for "No Proof of Insurance" and sent on your way with a mandatory court appearance. If you are stopped and your registration comes back "revoked, no insurance" you will be issued a "no insurance" citation and a "driving with revoked registration" citation. Your tag will be seized and returned to the state and your vehicle will be impounded. In both of those cases you are sent on your way, not arrested, with a mandatory court appearance in your future.
