For a handgun you have to use a contract carrier(UPS, FedEx, etc) if in state ONLY for a handgun. Handguns can't go through the USPS unless going to an FFL. Must go to an FFL either way if out of state.

I've used FedEx and UPS before to ship handguns in state. I used to do it all the time. It's perfectly legal. You just can't use USPS and you're supposed to tell them it contains a gun(that part always slipped my mind though, oops).

They are forbidden from marking it as having a firearm in it anyways so it's not like it matters.

Yes, it is perfectly legal. He just has to use UPS/FedEx.

Legality wise you’re not in trouble nor is he nor did you do anything wrong. If he walked into UPS/FedEx and declared it as a firearm they’d require it to go to an FFL but not because law requires them too.
