I never contracted it. I used to rabbit hunt ALOT. Had a hell of a good pack of beagles. They weren't blazing fast but they wouldn't come off that track. My jump dog thought she was a pointer cause she would freeze until the other dogs got to her before starting the race. After she Jumped a rabbit she would come back to me until it was time to find another bunny.
But yeah. I would rather clean a rabbit than squirrel. It's much easier.
Grandad, uncle got it. About killed them. A guy that used to be head of the Beagle club in town got it - and dig this - his wife got it from preparing the meal.
I wear rubber gloves cleaning hogs, and rabbits on the few occasions I shoot them.
Now squirrel, browned with some red pepper, then steam it til the bones fall out, add to gumbo.....yessir. Why anyone would put a chicken in gumbo if they had access to squirrels, I'll never know.
