I do have a problem when the tax exempt status is exploited. There's a church here that owns a large property with several really nice houses on it and they're tax exempt as I understand it.

It's a conditional exemption. Code Section 48-5-41(3) states "[a]ll property owned by religious groups and used ONLY for single-family residences and when NO INCOME is derived from the property" is exempt from ad valorem property tax. If a Church isn't complying with the statute, then they are responsible for the property tax.
