I am in the market for a new general purpose rifle...I have pretty much narrowed my search down to either a PTR-91 or AK variant.

Cost is a factor, which normally would make the AK a clear winner as I could buy the gun ( Zastava M70) and a couple cases of ammo for the price of one PTR-91.

I am looking at the 16" versions of both the PTR91s.

The complication is that I already have over 1500 rounds of quality surplus 7.62x51mm stashed away that I got on the cheap.

They are all uber reliable and fairly user friendly as far as maintenance/parts replacement goes. I live in the suburbs, so full house 308 is a bit much but in any situation where I'd be using the gun I'd want as much punch as I could get. The 308 round is so versatile with a nearly unlimited number of options and the PTR will eat steel case like it's candy from what I understand. I have .45s for standard HD scenarios, this rifle will be my Chicom/Hillary Clinton/UN invasion gun until I'm done with school and can buy another SCAR.

I am a HK fan, but I cannot deny the rugged simplicity of the AK. I have handled both guns and I think the HK instills a bit more confidence but the AK is just such a handy little gun that packs a punch.

Which would you pick and why?

I loved my PTR. 18" barrel, side folder, but it was damned heavy. Build quality was top notch, almost free mags, and the trigger was what you'd expect.

I've had the honor and pleasure to hang out with Jim Fuller of Rifle Dynamics and he is truly a master craftsman when it comes to AK's.

Here's two videos that will help you on what to look for in an AK. They're similar in content, different in quality of the video.

Why not an AK in .308?

I also understand wanting a PT91, I was hunting one for a while after I had owned a C93 for a bit, but at the time everyone wanted big dollars for the better PTRs and I was leery of the CETMEs

If I'm going to spend the money to feed a 308 gun then it will be a PTR. Those 308 AKs are cool and all and a bit cheaper but the mags seem to be pretty pricey and hard to find. PTR mags are $3/each. Plus, if I go AK it will be one that I can easily take parts off of any other AK and get it back running again should something break.

I gotcha. I guess the only thing that would concern me is the (sometimes) finicky roller system, but I suppose with HK parts, it wouldn't be as much of a concern. I keep telling myself I will get back into .308, but every time I get one, the cost of ammo causes it to be traded for something I'll shoot more often..... yet I keep eying another AR10

I have the Garand that just sits in the safe, but that is more for it's history, so I use that as an argument to myself anytime I start thinking about another .308 / 30.06 platform ;)

Now after watching my buddy Jordon's review on the Sig 556xi Russian, I'm not sure I'd buy it since it seems to jam a lot.

I've completely fallen in love with .308 since getting this M1a SOCOMII.

That Turkish ZQI ammo at Wally World is under a buck a round and the M1A will eat it up like a box a Girl Scout Thin Mints out of the freezer in my house. :)

The SCAR ate that stuff happily...it's decent quality brass ammo for MUCH less than $1 a round!
