he just sent me this.

Because the rifle has no scratches that usually comes with being in the field, I conclude that it has been refinished and parkarized. The stock has also been refinised. I do not know what the serial number range is? Maybe it would help if I tell you about the marking on the rifle. I can tell you that the rifles' receiver is stamped with U.S.RIFLE , CAL 30 M1, SPRINGFIELD, ARMORY, 3117396. The bolt is stamped with 6528287-SA, A16. I have no problems answering your questions. You are not bad to work with

How is the bore? She must have been pretty rough to take that amount of sanding on the stock (you want to see some proud wood, even after refinishing unless it's been dragged behind a truck), and re-parking.

He says the rifling is bright and proud. He tried taking a picture of it but his camera skills are lacking so it looks just like light, can't see any detail. It sounds like this rifle was given to him by his men upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, and that they cleaned it up to be a pretty gift.

Ok, well good. They did sand the shit out of that stock. The buttplate extends beyond the wood quite a ways. But for a shooter, who the hell cares. Seems like a great deal.

If he has an M2 carttridge as him to stick the bullet-end in the barrel and take a pic. Rough way of gauging muzzle erosion. Even if it is wore out a new Criterion unit is $200.

It is likely a mixmaster given that it is a pre-WW2 receiver with a post WW2 trigger group. Still a very nice rifle and well worth your Desert Eagle.

Those pre-WW2 receivers are getting hard to find.

I have asked him to do this twice, but as I said he is elderly and has shitty camera skills so I am not sure we are going to get that picture. I would have to drive to Talking Rock to get it (although not a horrible thing since Bigguns BBQ is there)

Is pre war more desirable or less?

Actually disregard. I misread the SN...its late WW2. I thought it was a 6 digit SN....reading fail on my part.

It's still a WW2 rifle that looks great. If you want a Garand I'd say the value is equal if you put your D.E. at $900-1k.

Scott, I do not have M2 ball, I reload with Hornady SST. I am sending you what I got. I did like in the picture, I am not familiar with what the picture shows, please educate me, has to do with measurements. I can tell you that in GA, the average shot is 50 yards. When I have a good day, my bullets will group pretty consistently the size of a quarter.

If that is really an '06 cartridge that barrel is wore out. I'm sure it shoots just fine it just won't be accurate at all.

Depends on what you want it for. That wouldn't scare me, but he would need to add some coin. A new Criterion is $200 and Will can install it for ya.

There's no way in hell that has crisp rifling. They bought the cheapest pos they could find, knowing that it would be re-finished and used as a presentation gun. You don't want that.

Id be more concerned with the receiver being a re-weld. Given the fact that you're not a Garand guy I'd probably pass.

That and a myriad of other potential issues. That thing was beat to shit to warrant that amount of sanding and refinishing.

Bummer, I was looking forward to a sweet Garand. Oh well. What I need to do is just drive down to Anniston and pick one up with my handy dandy C&R FFL which I have never used for anything besides discounts.
