I never use reloads or remanufactured ammo.
It's not worth it to me. Others may disagree while saving a few bucks.
They sell new too, not just reman.

For plinking and practice I buy whatever I can get the cheapest. To me, there's no sense in blowing extra money down range for no good reason.

Well I hope what you practice with matches the weight and velocity of what you carry/use, otherwise it's just shooting.

I agree. I reload for this reason- it allows me to get my finger on the trigger more often using less resources. And of course reloading lets you tailor loads to what you're doing... USPSA matches are a different animal compared to hunting or self defense. (I do stick with factory loads for self defense- it just doesn't make sense to me to use your own recipe for that purpose)

Regardless, I would argue that shooting practice is valuable whether it's .22LR at paper or self defense loads out of your EDC (also at paper). Of course it's best to shoot your carry ammo out of our EDC weapon. But for me that's not very practical. Some shooting is better than no shooting, in my opinion. And of course it's fun too.

You always shoot the same rounds you carry??? Sounds expensive.
I log every type of ammo in every gun I shoot because it's important to me to know factors such as penetration, trajectory, etc.
And yes, I do shoot what I carry.
Mostly Corbon, Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Fiocchi, Geco.
Yesterday I shot 4 boxes of Geco BAT 9mm, 12 boxes of Fiocchi Combat 9mm, 9 boxes of Underwood 9mm and .357sig in various weights, 4 boxes of Dynamit Nobel .32, 2 boxes of S&B .32 AP, and 3 boxes of Santa Barbara .380.
The ammo above is roughly $900. Shot through 14 different handguns. In about 4hrs.
I do a lot of testing with various ammo from different guns and log it all. I always want to know what happens after the bang, where it hits and what damage it does into various targets from various guns at various distances.

And that was just the handguns.
Had several rifles as well; several .22, several 5.45, 7.62, 54R, 22-250, 257wby, 7mm rem, and 6.5 Grendel, all from 50-600m. (The .22s did alright up to 300m with Aguila Interceptor)

Sounds tedious. I just use online resources for ammo specs, and make sure it functions fine in my guns. I'm kind of a tightwad though, because I also don't test crash my own cars.

I have not been impressed. 308 is not consistent - even using their 178 gr AMAX. I ordered a bunch of 9mm from them a year or so ago and a surprising number of rounds did not have the bullet properly seated into the case - they were over inserted. Plenty of peaple have had great success, but I have no interest in picking through all my ammo before I go shoot. There are plenty of other options out there IMHO.

Then how do you know you're kids are going to be safe in the event of an accident?
You need to go crash your car before it's too late. Think of the children...

It's all relative to your expectations I guess.
Let's suppose those online resources are 100% accurate. Now if all ammo and guns you own or plan to buy has been tested against all targets at all distances from what you will be wanting/needing/expecting, then fine.
But even then, ammo changes over time and with different batches. Even Underwood .357sig has been downloaded slightly from the stuff they initially put out.

So basically, you're like the rain man of the ammo community?

Those changes don't matter much to me. At the end of the day, our sd ammo choices boil down to the best that's ever been available to mankind, engineered and designed with the best tech and brightest minds in the business. We're splitting hairs between the best of the best.

I'm going to leave the analytics to the people that have the time and resources to do it properly.

What actual difference did underwood slightly underloading 357sig make? A half inch poi at 25 yards? Once you know your preferred SD ammo functions in your pistol and has a similar sight picture as your practice ammo, what else is there?

There are two types of insanity. The guy that's never fired his SD ammo out of his carry gun and the guy that only shoots his SD ammo.

Velocity was reduced by an average of about 90fps over prior 125gr they first had in the larger white boxes.
That could be significant if the extra velocity is required. Point of impact is one thing, penetration is another.
I don't see it as insanity, it's ensuring performance is as close to 100% as possible based on prior testing.
If someone else cannot afford it (only good reason) then mmmkay

What are your needs based upon, the "average" defense situation? With all of this data and exacting analysis, you should consider carrying a multitude of calibers and ammunition to give yourself the optimal chance of success. That means defending yourself from an adversary wearing a 9% cotton tshirt, driving a car with a windshield raked at 37 degrees, or one that's running toward you at 6.3 miles per hour, wearing a mid-weight redbull sweatshirt, a fake (maybe) gold jesus pendant that covers 17% of the chest region, and purchased pre-precious metal crisis from the Indiana state fair.

These real situations each present the type of difficulty that can't be overcome by accepting a 90 fps average shift in velocity from previous norms.

Get out there and test compadre, and be safe!
