I had the soft luggage with a huge zippered pocket on the front. Somehow it must have got caught on a machine, and ripped that pocket about halfway off. The airline will pay you but it wasn't worth the effort, especially when you land and you have places to be.
So we've gotten the hard shell luggage since then. It's got scuffs and bruises, but no damage that makes it unusable.
Also it's all pretty much the same color as my car. So you can pick it out a mile away from the baggage pickup. Otherwise we would be looking for dark luggage with a yellow tie around the the handle or whatever else you and everyone else comes up with to identify your luggage easily.

Kirkland brand at Costco is supposed to be decent. Back when I traveled I mostly did carry-on and checked only if I had a longer trip.
Those rolling duffle bags look like they can hold a lot of stuff but I don't know how they hold up.
