I just ordered a 225 dollar stock for a gun I have 100 dollars in.
Yugo-captured K98. Still had a few waffenampts on it. Killed deer, hogs armadillos with it. Refurbed the stock years ago, rust blued the metal. Let Appleseed students run countless rounds through it. Ran a couple Run N Guns with it.
It started getting a nasty crack behind the rear bolt (not unusual) after Pecos in 2018. I fixed it recently, drilled through the wrist and epoxied a dowel in. It cracked again. This time I hogged out a bunch of the old oil-soaked wood, re-bedded it, added a steel pin through the bridge. It cracked again Saturday.
I was sick about. Then I had a revelation.
So - when I get my new stock in, I'll disassemble the old one and saw through the butt. That part of the stock should be like new on the inside. (WW2 laminate) My good friend Johnny is a knifemaker, he's going to make me a cool bushcraft-style knife and use some of the laminated stock for the handle.
