Is that the specwar brake? I've got one I can go measure if it would help-
Yeah it's the Specwar brake. I think it's long enough it's the process I'm concerned about. Can it be done. I've never seen one anywhere.

I think you'll have to measure very closely. If a 14.5" barrel exceeds 16" with it installed from bolt face to brake tip, it won't be by much.

Let us know! I have several of these and have looked at 14.5" barrels to pin to non-NFA uppers with a permanently mounted brake.

Actually now that I think about it, I could measure for you on a 16" barrel and give you overall length. May take a moment, though.

Is there enough room on the brake to have it pin weld without messing up anything.

Shoot- I didn't go measure that thing. The pin hole would likely be through the flats at the back end- Just about any side pin should be ok. I'd say if you have a 1/16th diameter pin would be enough. All the pin does is stick into the barrel thread enough to prevent the flash hider from unscrewing. So if the flat is 1/8" or more wide, it should have enough material.

ok, so I went and measured my pws rifle with a 16" barrel and the specwar brake installed. note that pws lists this as a 16.1" barrel on their website.

I put the cleaning rod down the barrel, reinstalled the bcg, and closed the bolt. the rod is all the way back on the closed bolt.

I used my specially made "marker" aka duct tape to mark the end of the brake.

here is the measurement.

it reads 18" on the nose.

so that should mean that the brake adds 1.9" or 2" to the barrel length.

you should be good to go assuming that there's enough material to do a proper weld.

I would think that you're looking at an overall barrel length of 16.4"+ with a true 14.5" barrel.

one last thing to consider...sico describes the brake as being a "blast baffle" when used with the specwar. as I understand it, this means that it is potentially a sacrificial piece to preserve the life of the can. I wonder what the expected life of the brake is when ran suppressed? might be a bitch to change out once it's pinned and welded.

WoW that's good to know. I can pin weld the flash hider that came with it instead since it will be ran only with the can anyway. I'll put the brake on another full size platform.

That basement looks for familiar. I can't remember if I was held captive there or something else.

I've got about 500 rounds through mine and it's fine. Got a fair amount of lead/crap build up, but not eroding yet as far as I can tell.

Also- the pin/weld isn't that hard to undo. Basically, if you know where the weld is located (i.e. not ground perfectly smooth and refinished) you can drill it out. Then the pin is free to fall out and you can unscrew the brake. The only 'damage' will be done to the brake... but if it's done anyway, it's getting replaced.

The hard part is locating the right place to drill the new brake for the new pin... it's got to match up with the old indent in the barrel threads, or just drill into the threads again at a different spot.

What's the advantage or difference with brake instead of flash suppressor when using a can is there any difference in recoil or flip. Just curious if anyone has tried both or not. I may have to try this out next time I'm at the range.

Can on: the recoil is softer- more of a push than a punch. Muzzle rise is almost non-existent on both my bolt guns and AR. However, be prepared to adjust sights due to point of impact shift. The specwar makes my AR shoot 6 MOA low, but it's very consistent, so you can adjust for it.

I'm sure there's not much difference between the brake and flash hider with the can attached.

Can off: muzzle brake significantly reduces muzzle rise and recoil. It also significantly increases the distance between you and other shooters... they tend to move away.

So if there's no difference with can on then it doesn't matter. The brake would need to be on the 3 gun or long range rifle I guess. Cool thanks

Yeah- I can't see the muzzle device making any significant difference with the can on... but it is supposed to take the initial blast, saving wear and tear on your can (in theory).

I have the one brake and four flash hiders for the specwar on multiple platforms. no difference suppressed that I can tell.

with the can off though, they are worlds apart.

the brake has the most amazing recoil mitigation. the rifle does not move. however, if it did, you'd not be able to hear it. nor would anyone within 200 yards of you.
