For the sake of this thought experiment lets say that it is 2017, Hillary has just activated the brain chip in the liberals/lefties brains and they, along with UN, North Koreans, and Chicoms have taken up arms and are invading.

You live in the northern reaches of the suburbs of Atlanta. 15-20 minutes of driving north and you would be in a semi-rural area. 15-20 mins south and you're inside the perimeter. You plan on trying to leave and find a hill somewhere in north GA to hold out, but you have got to fight your way there.

Leaving the fact that you'd likely never make it out of the suburbs, in this type of situation, where you would spend some time in the suburbs and some time in a rural area, would you rather have some type of large caliber battle rifle or an intermediate caliber carbine? I'm talking along the lines of a 16" .semi auto .308 as a battle rifle vs either a 7.62 AK or 5.56 AR.

Would you rather have the punch of a full powered rifle round that can do all things well or the intermediate power of an AK or AR that is much better for urban environments but is somewhat lacking in a open rural area?

tough question. since I only have a 308 bolt, and I have an AK and AR. I guess I'm going with the AK. good power, accuracy is decent, not a whole lot of kick for those drunken follow up shots.

5.56 AR or maybe an AK. I if its too far away for them to be effective I am going to avoid a confrontation if at all possible.

I would rather have larger mags and lighter weight ammo.

I happy with my lightweight 5.56. In that situation I'd have a lot of shit to haul with me, and a 12 pound rifle/ammo/optic combo isn't getting the nod. Light and fast. The 223 has you covered.

The US Army made this very decision when they dropped the M14 and replaced it with the M16.

You can carry more rounds for any set amount of weight with the smaller cartridges.

But if I had a rickshaw pulled by one of my subjects I'd go big bore all day long.

This is my thought as well. And as hayata alluded, is exactly why the US military opted for the AR platform. The 7.62 Caliber "does everything well" on paper. But in practice, it's heavier to carry, you end up with less ammunition on your person and very, very few people can run a big bore as fast as a 5.56. In almost any survival or self defense scenario like this, my suppressed 11.5" SBR would get the nod.

Although I love my SOCOM II M1A (.308), I'd probably grab my AK cause it would hold more rounds in a mag, have adequate knock down power, it's reliable as hell and the ammo is cheaper, thus I have more of it.

I like the AR 308 for this scenario, but I'm not Rambo and am too big of a pussy to carry that thing and the ammo for an extended period of time. If I could only grab one rifle to hit the road with, I'd probably take my AR74.

My parents have a sort of bugout/cult compound up in the north ga mountains. If I can, I've got to make my way up there.

Anyway, I'm not going anywhere. I'll be on my roof with a buddy of mine, eating hotpockets, sipping tea, and popping zombies.
