I've never shot the same model in 9 and 45. 99% of my experience with .45 is in higher end 1911s. They're better than my Glock or XDs, but I still carry 9 and don't worry about it. It's cheaper and it's good enough. If we really cared about stopping power, we'd carry a hot 10mm or magnum revolver.

And you get twice as many tries with 9mm. Most stops from any handgun are psychological, not physical, so you should carry whatever you can deploy the quickest, with the most accuracy.

Only gun ever? I'd have to go with a H&R 12ga or a Ruger 10-22. The Chinese 870 clone it's really well made and could be used for HD and could kill most any animal in north America. The .22 because it's probably the second most versatile weapon I could think of in the price range.
