I had the 1-4 Viper PST. It was super nice over all. I realize its not gonna get you out to 600 yards BUT I can tell you about the scope in general.
Robust and durable
Very nice, crisp, clear glass
Kinda shitty zoom adjustments, throw lever would be nice (apparently you can order these separate)
No end caps to protect the glass, the ones vortex sells separately BLOOOOOOW
I loved the reticle on mine, it was a 1 moa or less dot with four like quarter circles around it, kinda like an Eotech. It also had additional lines to account for drop at more distances.
I also really liked that it lit up and the on dial was like on off on off every click, so you could just put it up about where you like it brightness wise, and click once in either direction to turn it off and back on.
Overall I really did like it and hate that I traded it...

The VVPST line are great scopes for the money spent. I see them come through my school on a regular basis with very little issues. As a matter of fact, I've seen waaaaay less issues with the VVPST than I do with the more expensive Leupold Mark4 line.

No issues running to 1,000yds + with the correct power scope from the VVPST line.

For 600yds and closer, either the SFP 2.5-10x44mm or FFP 2.5-10x32mm would work well.

The 4-16x50mm, SFP or FFP, would work well also, and give a bit more magnification in case you want to reach out a bit further.

The 6-24x50mm, SFP or FFP, is a good scope with more top end power than you need, but you can always dial it down when not needed. Main issue with this scope would be what kind of shooting you are doing overall and whether or not a 6x bottom end is too high. For instance, if you want to use it as a hunting scope in wooded areas.

I've been looking at this one particularly.

http://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-viper-pst-4-16x50-riflescopes.html

Really the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that the turrets just twist. Like you don't have to pull up then twist or something like that. Maybe that's the norm and I just don't know it.

Locking turrets aren't something you will find in an optic in this price range. Quite frankly, I doubt you'll need them.

Contact Scott Berish at Liberty Optics and tell him Shep sent ya. I bet he can beat that price. http://www.libertyoptics.com

The Sighteon SIII line are great scopes as well, and Scott won't steer you wrong.

The Sightron SIII has better glass than the VVPST and one of the strongest erector assemblies in the industry. I like the turrets of the VVPST better. Sightron SIII costs slightly more. So, it's a toss up.

Go with Scott's recommendation and you will not regret it. He's one of the most optic knowledgeable folks I've ever met.

@cmshoot how important do you think Zero Stops are?

For non-military/non-LEO; not very. I'll get them if they're an option, but I don't worry about it otherwise. Again, not something you're going to find in the price range you're looking at.

If you jump up in price a bit, Nightforce has an SHV 3-10x and 2 different 4-14x's. One of the 4-14x's has a ZeroSet feature. If it interests you, call Mike Cecil at CS Tactical and drop my name.

Oh... I'd like to be able to hit a 12" plate at 600yds consistently and easily.

With good fundamentals, 3x-4x is plenty if the weapon/ammo combo is capable of 1 moa. A good AR and decent plinking ammo should be capable of 2 moa, the 12", but I would think you would need match ammo or a developed load to be consistent in making that hit.

Damn, some of you guys must have way above average vision.
A 12" plate at 600yds is tiny at 4x magnification regardless of how good the scope is.
