What's the best bang for the buck rifle in 308?

The one I shot would. I would still choose the savage for the proven accuracy if it was my only bolt action 308

thats not a plastic stock. That is the accustock. thats pretty dense composite compared to the hog hunters plastic stock

I never called into question the density of the plastic. There's nothing wrong with plastic stocks depending on the intended purpose of the rifle. I just think they're ugly, that one in particular.

its just when people say plastic they are generally referring to the flimsly plastic stocks, not the dense composite stocks.

Yes but it's a proven system that will last you forever. There are also tons of aftermarket parts that allows you to tune your rifle the way you would like it. If you see them at $700 - $1000 range then you are getting ripped off. I can get a 700 SPS Tactical for $550 all day. Also, is this a hunting or a precision rifle? If it is a hunting rifle go with Savage, if it is a precision rifle, go with the Remington because you can upgrade it as you go.

Wat? Savage has tons of upgrades and by far the easiest barrel swap system. Remington has lost that advantage.

I'd go Savage over Remington any day of the week. And twice on Sunday.

Every "upgrade" for a Rem 700 is available for a Savage ......the one upgrade that isn't available for a Savage is having a gunsmith screw a new barrel on, cause you can do it in your own garage with the correct tools. Savage barrels can be bought prechambered and headspace with a barrel nut, unlike a Remington it's gotta be finish chambered and gunsmith installed.

I have a 22 year old Savage 110 tactical that shoots sub MOA... I see no reason to replace it. I'd like to put a new stock on it, and add a detachable mag well, so I could feed it from a external mag.

Easily done .... it's only money ... Manners stock or a McMillen both can be had with built in bottom metal to take detachable mags.

They may not be as tacticool as some of the other rifles mentioned here, but no other rifle in the $500-$600 range measures up IMO.
The only thing I don't like about mine is that the stock is so damn sexy I don't want to drag it into the woods and scratch it up.

Mines the first one, the regular hunter. There's some really cool stuff in the line but they get pricey.
