I've had boats all my life. Never had any major problems with them. As long as you take care of them they can be as reliable or more reliable than your car. I would buy an inboard/outboard (stern drive) if you are looking at that type of boat. Sad thing is most people buy boats and very rarley use them and then they go to hell

I buy boats that have been seized by marinas for non paint of dock rents. Add up how many times a year you rent and see if it's worth owning. We are on a boat every weekend year round usually.

I rent from the Navy Lakesite and they are cheap from there. Not sure non DOD can get into there or rent though.
