I agree with many of his points and overall sentiment but there isn't another country that is "better"...it's hard to quantify "better".
I can agree. In the big picture our country is still carried forward by the momentum of past greatness. Our more recent choices are eroding our foundation and our slowing our forward motion. His description is pretty good for a two minute diatribe, but then Aaron Sorkin is a heck of a writer.
The foundation of this country is not eroding, and has not eroded. That's complete bullshit, and simply a parroted talking point that gets tosses around when things aren't going your way. Damn, gays have equal rights under the law.....the country's foundation is being eroded...bullshit.
That said, there is no "greatest country". Having lived in several, I will say that opportunity for social mobility is much greater in the US than anyplace else on earth. If our educational system was as good as the bottom of the barrel in the EU, we'd have an incredible future. If we could model a system like Finland's, we'd have no equal. Being tracking into a job (as you are in Europe) has it's advantages and disadvantages. One often ignored disadvantage is the loss of hope for some people. If you're tracked into a job as a train conductor, and you hate it..to fucking bad. You're a train conductor forever, and you can't change jobs. You'll get an incredible pension, great pay, and 12 weeks paid vacation though.
That's the foundation of this country...choice. The ability to make a decision and run with it, regardless your parents social class or wealth. No other country has that amount of social mobility, and it's the reason we attract so many brilliant minds.
There are a lot of other countries I could easily call home though......if I could export our gun laws.

I would then say the content of our country is eroding away as the demoralization of our youth and religion is being taught away from our beliefs or the beliefs that i was taught when i was young..there was a pride to being American(not gay) and what America stood for and stands for on the world stage.
Quite a few people are proud to be American now that law doesn't discriminate based on sexual orientation. I'm more proud to be a part of a country that recognizes those individual rights, rather than one that would force people to be of a certain sexual orientation to gain equal rights under the law. If you aren't gay...nothing has changed for you...nothing.
The foundation of this country is personal freedom, freedom from religious persecution, and the freedom to blaze your own trail sans religion if you see fit. Religion has no place in the legislation of law. Mention of an ambiguous "god" here and there non-withstanding. The idea is to keep a cult/religion from enforcing it's views on people that'd rather not follow that religion. As long as religious doctrine is left to personal choice, and not mandated by law we're cool. As soon as religion sneaks it's way into law, we're in trouble. Worship the god you like, but don't expect that god to be present in the drafting of law. I don't want jesus or mohammad as part of any laws I'm required to obey, and I'll bet the majority of other people don't either.
The "content" of this country is eroding? I'm not tracking. I'm seeing advances in individual freedom.
"Morals" are up to the individual, and should be taught by the family, not the schools, the state or the Federal government. My morals may not mesh with yours, and that's fine. If you want to worship the devil, and have a devil statue in your yard...fine by me. I just don't want to have to worship the devil in order to get a drivers license, or special tax breaks.

I agree morals should be taught by families..but not much to the family structure any more..I see socialistic views becoming morals of the new world and with that morals of said structure being told and not taught..socialism is becoming a religious belief that is not chosen for many but forced upon.and our choices are becoming few..in the opposite direction..less personal choice and less personal freedom

Could it be that the morals they are teaching are just not in line with yours?
morals not inline for sure..and its the parents fault..as or an example of socialistic beliefs as religious (like) visit any college campus..non vocational
You can't tell me that the Patriot act isn't eroding the founding principles of this country.
Or Obamacare for that matter...I mean a government telling the people what they could buy is part of what created this country
I'm on the fence with the Patriot act for one major reason, if there is a US citizen that is actively engaging in terrorism, I feel they should have no protection from the rights of the land. On the other hand, the Patriot act has such a wide brush stroke and can be enacted pretty liberally (kind of like a traffic stop for "probable cause").
I understand and agree with you but if you think the Patriot act is really about keeping you safe you have been properly fooled.
If that were the case very specific legislation dealing with that very specific problem could have been written...or simply prosecute anyone fighting under the banner of a hostile nation or NGO as a traitor. Even John Adams chose to defend the lobster backs in Boston.
I totally disagree. A citizen is a citizen. Rights are enumerated as inherent to the state of being a human , not a privilege granted to those that agree with the actions of the state. Protest could be considered terrorism.
