Hot Bluing is a good way to go.
Cold rust bluing is another good 1 that takes many applications in a long process. This is the process they use on high quality double barrels shotguns that have soft soldered barrels. Hot bluing eats soft solder.

Well, stock is finished now! 10 coats of tru oil and 2 coats of wax and it's done! Now to clean up the butt plate and grip cap. After that I'll smooth up the action and wait for the mainframe to be blued.

I have to share with you guys the method I used to finish this stock. It was suggested to me by a fellow on the Marlin Owners Forum who does a lot of project guns. What you do is wipe the stock down with a Armor All wipe between coats of Tru Oil. It seems the the Armor All serves as some type of catylist for the Tru Oil. It speeds up drying time, improves penetration, and improves hardness. Don't know how but it does!
