I dunno. I'm guessing the quality of the optics (clarity, light transmission) are the main limiting factors.

Like I told a customer that asked about binos back when I worked at a gun shop out of college:

"How far can I see with these things?"

Me - "I'm not sure about these, but the cheapos that I have can see all the way to the moon."

Depends on the system. Some can see out to 15 km. Your rifle scope type system about 1000 meters.
