Talk me into or out of a M1A

I don't know much about these rifles. I am referring to the new ones by Springfield and not an old m-14.

Pros and cons? Accuracy? Good for hunting or long range?

I've got a stainless national match rifle- "newer" Springfield- I bought it from the original owner probably six or seven years ago.

There's not much to say about it. It's kind of boring really- it shoots exactly where I point it, basically every time. I've never had any issues out of it- aside from the cost of .308 (only because I'm used to .223 which is about 1/2 the cost).

I don't hunt, so I can't comment- but I have seen many Georgia deer brought down by the old .308.

.308 is fine for hunting up to elk with the proper bullet, and .308 excels accuracy wise at distance.
Cons: less modular, and a bit pricier than many other .308 platforms.
Pros: If you want an M1A then an M1A will fit the bill.

I got one a couple of weeks ago. Springfield M1A standard with ODG stock barely used for what I thought was a good price. I've run a box of ammo thru it and no issues. I would have shot more but a lot of kids on lake by us that day. It does have a little more recoil than my LR308 and less than my bolt 308's. I have an appointment to get it tuned up with a serious M1A gunsmith (Hook trained). He was very honest as to what to spend money on (Smith brake and Natl Match spring guide) and let him handle all the fitting. Once tuned up, it should have much less recoil and much better accuracy. PM me in a week and I'll be able to give an update.

Once I get mine tuned up, you are welcome to try it out and make an educated decision for yourself. I've wanted one for a while as I have all the AR's I will ever need and wanted something different in 308. I will say with a 22" barrel, you are getting a lot of velocity out of the 308 round that a 16" LR308 isn't going to give you. I was also told that they don't make very good suppressed weapons due to gas system and cycling issues. It can be done, just not recommended if that matters to you.

I have a M1A Socom 2 and love it. I was unsure at first but I really like this rifle. Just a little on the heavy side but maybe I am just a wimp! LOL

I shot one at the last southside meet and greet. I cant remember the dudes name now but he worked at the range. That thing was sweet as hell. Anyone who grabbed it was ringing a small ish plate at 200 yards with irons lol. I liked it a lot.

I had an M1A SOCOM 16. It was a fire breather and loud as hell. A 308 from a 16" barrel tends to do that though. I never shot past 100 with it, but it was spot on to there. Definitely heavier than the AR10 16" I had, but you feel like a boss shooting it. The ONLY reason I traded it was because I found my unicorn. If it had been any other gun I wouldn't have gotten rid of it.

I like my M1A. It feels just like what I had in Army basic training and took to the range a few times while stationed in Europe in the 1960s. I even have a proper bayonet for it.

I run a M1A Squad as my go to rifle. Best I've done is 5" group at 300yds with irons... for the money I'd think it's the best all around M1A

I will say this, I've shot some M14 EBR's that will hold head shots all day long at 800 meters, thats about 750 yards for folks who ain't good with the metric system.
