Picked up an unfired Steyr SSG69 PII a while back. Didn't need another long barrel .308 precision rifle, but I couldn't pass on the price, which included 2 mags.
Decided to have it cut down to 16.5" and threaded for a Silencerco flash suppressor/can attachment. Use it as a truck/knockaround/suppressor host, and a demo rifle for my Guerilla Sniper courses. That's when my plan derailed......
Cutting an SSG69 down turned out to be a huge PITA. Because it's press-fit, the barrel can't be pulled for cutting/threading. The action is tapered at the rear, with a rear lug, which makes grabbing it in a chuck problematic. Not that it can't be done, but the amount of set up and work involved makes it cost prohibitive. Like 4-5hrs of work.
I've got a good buddy who is a Master Tool and Die Maker.....a real genius. He took the project on for a free dinnner and later regretted it. But, the barrel has been cut and threaded.
Got a factory Picatinny rail, a padded cheekpiece, and did some mods to the forend sling setup to enable me to left-side mount the sling. Turned out great.
It's at Dobbs Defense in Hiram GA for Cerakote. Dark OD green on barreled action/rail, Sniper gray on stock, black on bolt handle/shroud.
I've got a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42mm F1 waiting at home to sit atop her.
I'll post pics when I get her back from Frank at Dobbs Defense.
