Scope Recommendations

I'm in no way an optics snob. Hell my aimpoint is used and probably seen more combat than I ever will. As you guys probably know, I am building a precision AR. I'm looking to be able to shoot 500 or more yards. It also should be pretty clear glass and be OK in low light, but not as important.

As far as budget is concerned... I'm looking for $300 - $5oo.. I dont care about brand.. it just needs to work and be fairly rugged.

I'm a fan of PA.. but will it do the job I want it to do?

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the PA scope, but I did shoot a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 500 yards with no problems on a pretty decent .22-250. I don't think I'd focus on the yardage too much- ranging at that yardage (not assuming known distance) is a bigger deal than the scope you're looking through.

Well, estimating wind is a much bigger deal than yardage.

I have had good experiences with Nikon and Leupold 2-7x (?) which should get you into that price range.

I put question mark because both are on bolt action rifles that I used when I was in high school. I don't remember shooting much past three hundred yards because of the terrain.

4x12 or even higher is probably preferred but I'll defer to others which more experience at that distance.

FWIW, I purchased a Nikon 1.5x4.5 for one of my ARs at the end of last year and the glass is pretty clear.

After shooting long distance, I've decided that the 4x Millet DMR rifle scope is fine for anything I'm going to do. If we're talking man sized targets and not X ring shots, 4x at 500 yards is plenty of magnification.

I don't have any personal experience with that scope but it is the one I'm going to buy when I get the cash up. It has great reviews for what it is.
