Target date retirement funds are pretty simple really. A target fund is more aggressive now and gets less aggressive as you get closer to the date. Some can be too conservative so you might want to choose one further out than your planned retirement. If you're risk averse then choose a date before your retirement.
They start out as mostly stock funds and shift towards bond and stable value.
