I think I solved your mistery. Kreb's receipt said "Galil pistol set". Handguards are the same size as my Galil pistol HG, that's why they did not fit your new rifle.
Both of my rifles are Gen2, Pic is below.
I did not have a chance to take the guard off yet.
What was the part# for your new MI handguard? Check on MI for the fit. If it turns out to be pistol length, I will buy it from you.

I suppose its possible I have 3 pistol handguards lol. Poor rifle is sitting with no handguard on it.
I got the 5" RS Regulate rail...confirmed with RS that that is the stock length for a rifle galil
