Other way. The gas port is closer to the breech and more energy is expelled out of the muzzle. With a longer barrel it has more pressure behind the the load because of the extended time it takes to leave the barrel.

You can adjust the gas system on Saigas and copies to cycle with lighter loads by opening the port. Maybe more expensive guns also, but my experience is with 1187s.
