The I2 is garbage. Aside from issues like battery bounce, or lasers cutting off etc it’s not a co-aligned unit so if you zero the visible laser during the day it doesn’t slave your IR laser. You have to zero it at night under NVGs. Old ass problem that’s been fixed with other units for years and years.
I had an OTAL-C that had a crazy tail on the laser even out to 50y or so. Up close it was a line shooting off the bloom. Went to shoot it, laser cut out everytime I fired. Sent back for a brand new OTAL and it did the same exact thing. Got my money back.
the Dbal D2 is awesome. It’s LED iR flood is insane. Like pushing flood out to 300y big bright and adjustable. It’s LED IR so there’s a slight signature at your unit but nothing not worth the incredible throw. Most our civi designators use true IR floods and they’re worthless neutered to 5MW. For comparison a PEQ-15 full power Mil/LEO unit pushes 45+ MW of IR but it will damage your eyes and WRECK a set of nods if you clip them with laser on accident or with reflection
Dbal A3 is “ok” it’s a slaved unit and like others is restricted to the 5MW civ power but does its job pretty good. The battery is located center front so if you place it behind irons you’ll have to pull the unit to replace batteries then reinstall not the end of the world but annoying for some
Steiner puts out good looking shit and some of it are winners but the majority is rushed, questionable quality control for huge dollars and a mediocre CS warranty program.
out of 4 units ive personally used 2 were dicked up so that’s where I stand with them
atpial looks good, it’s a PEQ-15 but has the worst IR flood of them all, is the most expensive and performs just like the Dbal A3 aside from being tougher and more reliable, however warranty is a year and if it breaks you’re fucked because the internals are fully potted in epoxy.
the MAWL is king ding a ling. Awesome unit, awesome switchology, but so expensive and constantly running software updates
wilcox raptar price is right, works well, looks good, but has to attach to a mil-spec rail that has the 1/4x20 holes machined in the top of it
TLDR, disappointed AF, weak ass story, who cares?
Also @preppingjedi best way is to either buy a Dbal D2 and run it as a complete flood/pointer combo or buy any other civilian unit you like and regardless of it having IR flood capabilities or not supplement it with an LED iR light like the surefires or IR modlite etc. then you’ll usually keep the designator to a smaller profile and be able to run wht/Ir led flood that throws hard. The lights won’t adjust for focus like a designator will, so the A3 and the LS321G like I have are nice because you can focus and relieve your IR flood on the unit
Damn, a lot to consider when purchasing hardware like that!
