I can't say for sure if it was originally a DOE specific design, but I do know they used it to slow them down. I just think it's a crazy cool piece of history. Especially me working in the power industry.

I bet the retaining pins weren't drilled perfectly straight. It wasn't off by a lot, but I noticed because I had to crank the windage way over on my carry handle.

20" ARs are definitely the best looking. I do need to buy some government profile barrels for these things, though. And maybe an ACOG for the A4.

A true dissipator is a rifle length gas system on a 16” length barrel (as opposed to a 20” barrel) the gas port is super finicky to get right and they typically have issues in regards to cycling. What they afforded was a longer sight radius.
fake dissipators use low profile gas blocks and mid length gas system with a faux front sight base pinned at the rifle distance on a 16” barrel
