It was a space race. This was probably the quickest and easiest thing to build to be the first man in orbit. I can't even imagine falling back to Earth and then jumping out. No one had even been in space before.

Yes, Vostok is a factory that made that watch. Also name of manned space ships. Voshod was supply ships, IIRC. Komandirskie was an army watch for a long time. Back in the USSR days available only at PX. One of mine is circa 1990, I came to the States with it.
