Best option at fulfilling my RPK carbine desire?

1) Buy RPK and have barrel chopped down to carbine length
2) Buy RPK parts kit and have carbine built
3) Buy complete RPK Carbine

1. Not a bad idea.
2. This is most expensive. Can add an optics rail most easily, which is an option I tend to like
3. Hard to find, will be overpriced. Worst option.

I see decent deals on a 74 every once in awhile, but not exactly what I'm looking for. I'd like a side folder AK74 this time as well... I have a Mid West Industries AK mount, that I completely forgot about, I need to get a optic for it, and zero it to my purple people eater.

I knew I should have gotten that 74 that @Rwjeter was selling a while back. $550 was a much better deal than I realized at the time.

Dude... no shit. I wish I had bought his rifle, but I was so far away... I had a "budget" AK74 when I was at Ft. McCoy and bought a Arsenal AK74, and foolishly sold the other one, when got off orders. I had a fair amount of range time with the budget 74, and had no complaints. I won't make the same mistake twice.

2 would be the route I would go. Like @triplestack3 said you could get it done how you wanted. There are quality builders out there who could do it for less than $650. Meridian Ordnance and Inrange being 2 that come to mind. I believe @noclevername was quoted a good price from Inrange on a M72 build. The 2 I built I had right about $650 in all the parts, receiver, barrel etc.
1 would require the barrel being pulled, cut, put on a lathe to turn journal for threading. Might be expensive after spending $1000+ on the base rpk.
3 might not be a bad option if you can find one at a decent price, I would think they go for around the same as their full size brothers?
