Lead bullets

I just loaded 3 boxes of 45 ACP with lead bullets I cast myself.
I also just ran 800 LEAD bullets through my lubersizer.
The heater I converted for my luber sizer works real good.

I loaded 5 more box's tonight. that makes 8 box's in two days. i think that's more then I shoot Saturday. LOL

Here is some of the bullets I cast.

The one on the left is .358 95gr I cast in a Lee mold. I cut off the base of the mold. The grease groove was the crimp groove. I use this in my 380ACP

The one in the middle is the 102 RN Lee .358 I use in my 9mm or 357mag.

The one on the right is the 105 SWC Lee .358 for 357 mag and I also load it in 9 mm. Makes nice clean holes.

Rich - what did you do with the mold to "cut off the base"? I'm guessing that you used a milling machine to shorten the top of the mold.

You can use a milling machine but I chucked it up in my lathe and faced it off.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lathe with a 4-jaw chuck. My little lathe only has a 3-jaw chuck or a face plate to fasten work to.

A lathe is a wonderful thing to have.

But you can do a lot of things with the hack saw and a file.

Scribe a line on the mold. Cut it off a little high with a hacksaw. Now file it down to the line. Put a piece of wet or dry sandpaper on a flat surface and draw the mold back and forth across the sand paper.

Fortunately, my little lathe (a Unimat that I bought over 40 years ago) also has the ability to have the headstock mounted on a post, giving me three tiny tools in one - lathe, drill press, and mill. I have almost all the major accessories made for it. For small jobs, it's quite handy. I'm sure I could mill off the top of aluminum bullet molds like the ones from Lee, but the cast iron molds that most mold makers sell would be a bit too much for the tiny machine.

I do use my full-sized drill press as a mill from time to time, though I usually need to clean up the work I do with that.

I have a milling attachment that replaces the compound slide on my lathe. This is real handy for cutting dovetails on barrels for sights and things like that.
