Working with family, for family, or having family working for you makes things exponentially more difficult. Generally you have more people expecting bigger pieces of the pie. Go to Brusters and tell me how much those kids are getting paid. There's a reason for that. A family member is going to make $50k a year to do the same job you could hire a kid to do for $8-$10hr.

If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. Most people like the idea of controlling their own fate, but when faced with the prospect that no one is going to write them a check if they don't put the money in the bank their thinking seems to change.
It's never simple dealing with employees. #1 motivator for employees today is "working for a competent supervisor". Money brings people in, it will give people a boost from time to time, but it will only keep them there for a short time. You have to be a goddamn psychiatrist to figure out how to get people to work nowadays.

I used to have my own emissions business now I work for a large corporations doing emissions. Better benefits more pay some weeks.
I worked for my dad for years, been out on my own a couple times before finally becoming successful independent of him. Went out at 22 and ended up falling flat on my face. I did well financially, but after about 5 years and a few stupid mistakes I was burned out and broke. Went back to work for dad for a while and was finally able to understand all the things he beat into my head as a kid. One of them is that you have to work ON your business not IN your business. I'll never forget that. I know people struggling in business who don't get that. I have a friend who has a really nice automotive repair shop but insists on doing all the wrench work himself. He thinks 1) If you want it done right you have to do it yourself and 2) He can't afford to hire a mechanic. It's a vicious cycle which I got stuck in at 22-25 years old that ultimately cost me just about everything.
Well I'm pretty much done. My wife makes enough for us and I have a 401k. There may be an inheritance down the road but I'm not counting on it. I'm enjoying working for somebody else now and complaining about how they run things. It gives me something to bitch about besides my own shortcomings.
That's another thing about working for yourself. When something doesn't go right, it's all you. If you fail, it's all you. There's no one else to blame and that can be a tough pill to swallow. Although, that doesn't stop people from blaming the economy, the employees, the customer base and anything else they can think of. Hell, I heard a guy say business was slow because the fair was in town.
