Sounds like a last ditch rifle. Very cool. I'd clean up the wood, and oil it. But I'd never fire it.
I have absolutely zero intentions on firing it. I will probably end hanging out on the wall in the game room. It used to hang over the fireplace in the basement at this house when I was growing up.

I have a wood gun case my Grandfather built, it has slots for 13 rifles, I have 7 WWII milsurp rifles to put in it. I'd love to have a Japanese rifle like that to put in it. It makes for a cool display and conversation piece.

I only thought last ditch rifles were type 99s. I did a bit of research after I got one, but may be wrong. Mine has a mum, but lacks some reciever markings earlier rifles have.

It is definitely a conversation starter.

Dude, I have no clue about Jap rifles... All I know is that I want one with the mum intact for my WWII collection.

@Cudruln if you would like I can meet up and take a look at it and tell you more about it.
I have several of these rifles including one converted by the Chinese to fire 7.62X39.
This is one of mine that I got as a Vet buy 20 or so years ago, the only thing missing is the dust cover and I do have the matching Bayonet too:

Fairly certain that the OP's rifle is a Type 38. The safety on the bolt and the receiver bridge are all wrong for a Type 30. In that condition I'd say it's worth about $100. I'd need to see it up close to be sure. Sorry for the necro post, but I haven't been here much in a while.

Thanks for the help. The sentimental value is worth more than an actual value, so I have no concern there.
