Hey y'all. I'm going to be spending a good bit of time in Europe over the next few years, and I need to come up with some good ideas for innocuous looking improvised weapons. Knives are iffy, especially locking knives. I'd love to carry one (and I probably will) but I'll be doing so at my peril.
What are some other good ideas that won't draw too much attention?

Tactical pens? I'll get one as soon as I figure out a decent brand.

It can't be anything that looks too "tactical", the more benign looking the better.

Thanks Gang!

What do the laws limit you to carrying there? When you say knives are iffy, how so? Type or length?

Well it varies and LE has the ability to deem anything illegal. Locking pocket knives are a no no in Switzerland and France (the two countries of primary concern). Blade length is also a concern. Carrying without a valid reason is a concern (sd is not a valid reason). You can carry a utility knife if you are a carpenter, but not if you're a bus driver. It's just a bitch, and if you run into a cop that wants to be a dick they can classify any knife regardless of size, type, color, locking variety, etc etc etc as a "deadly weapon". I really don't want to play that game.

Wasp Spray. 100% serious.
Yeah, probably not practical and not readily available in CH. Geneva is home to the UN. Wasp spray is just a can that emits the sound "hello insect creatures, I'd really appreciate you moving house somewhere else if you would please".

Good luck. I got away with carrying knives around in Germany because of being in close proximity to the base.
Pool cue? ou could have it in a travel bag and if asked just say your going to shoot some billiards. Not the best idea ever but that kind of stuff will be your only option.

I wouldn't be worried about needing a weapon in Switzerland though...I hear a lto of the locals are armed.

France....good luck.

Not unless you are a carpenter, or working in a grocery store opening boxes...just don't take it out on the street.

no, not if your not in a profession that uses one daily....and not being carried on your person while not performing a job. Yes, it's that bad.

Yeah some of the locals are armed, but they're mainly kids that just got off of the train and are on their way home. It's unlikely they have any ammo on them. CCW is a no-go for anyone.

I'm not really worried about needing a weapon anywhere, I just want to always have something. I carried a knife all over Germany, and was close enough to needing it that I'll continue to carry one. If you have to use it, you'll be in a world of shit, so you'd better make sure it's life or death.

In most, if not all countries in the EU, you don't have the right to use an implement to defend your life.

Yes it is...I know we joke around about it but it is serious over there. A guy from the base was in Berlin and a cop saw his Gerber pocket knife...the 1st Shirt had to go get him from jail.

It makes me sick honestly. The sheer stupidity of weapons laws and their effect on criminals.

Some type of cordage... That can be woven into whatever you need while having downtime.

Sharpening a credit card that has expired?

I do remember one of the flight engineers getting hassled for a bottle opener in Homburg; he had it out on the table (had a small folding blade built in), but he was just told to take it back to the hotel. I just stuck to the premise of out of sight out of mind.

Yeah, if found, that'd land me in jail. It needs to be something that's not purpose built for defense..or at least is multi-purpose with defense being secondary.
