HD AR ammo

what ammo do y'all keep in you AR for HD?

I've read good things about TAP ammo but it's expensive as hell and would cost a bunch to fill 2 30 round mags.

Is there another option that works well for cheaper or do I need to just fork over the coin for the TAP?

For HD I prefer some type of JSP bullet. I've personally tried Federal Fusion 62gr and 64gr Speer Gold Dot(for feeding reliability, NOT penetration/expansion) and had no issues. I've read that some peoples rifles don't like JSP bullets, but I've never had any issues.

I would look for something with minimal penetration, so you don't accidently blow through walls and hit a target you where not aiming for.

I'm with you on that. I'll have my 9mm and 12ga. handy. That said, I do keep a couple mags of Hornady V-max around just in case shit gets real.

I'd still grab my Glock for most bumps in the night but if I have a rifle I might as well keep it loaded with something that works. I'll try the federal and gold dots for reliability.

I don't use 5.56 for HD. I have several handguns throughout the house for that.

Not to start a debate here - but don't 9mm, 45acp, and other pistol rounds penetrate common building materials like drywall, etc. better than 5.56?

I have always heard that the smaller projectile traveling at much higher speeds tends to fragment upon impacting many of these which can stop penetration - and thus not travel through multiple rooms while the larger, slower bullets may pass through.

I am far from an expert so just looking for any insights.

Regardless of penetrating capabilities, I don't want to post up in my bedroom with an AR. My pistols fit nicely in the night stands I have. Cannot say that about my ARs, even my 10.5".

Plus pistols are easier for my wife to handle, and that's another reason.

There is a tool for every job. The AR wouldn't be the first gun I grab but it just makes sense to have it available with good ammo if the need arises. The only time I have ever NEEDED a gun an AR would have been great over my Glock.

The results of the Federal Fusion 62 grain ammo on mid-sized game is pretty well documented. I can't imagine any two-legged creature enjoying being hit center-mass with this round. Hornady VMax is also a strong contender due to its rapid expansion. I've never used the TAP round but it seems to have a strong following.

Doesn't Barnes also make a Tactx (did I get that right?) bullet in 223 (.224) caliber? These have been shown to be devasting to deer-sized game and are offered as loaded ammunition from several manufacturers.

These are just some thoughts on the collective knowledge I've gained cruising internet boards so I don't (thank God) have any personal experience putting 223/556 rounds into human targets.

Absolutely true. A fragmenting super fast bullet doesn't have near the penetration a heavier, slower bullet does.

Speer gold dots in 55,64, and 75 have been on sell at PSA. I just picked some up, but I've been keeping m193 for home defense.
