Gun Shop Etiquette. What's your thought on these "rules"? Have you seen any of these broken? Have you broken any?

For most of you, a trip to the gun shop is like a child’s trip to Disney; You don’t ever want to leave. With these trips come unwritten rules of how to conduct yourself while browsing the fine selection of firearms and accessories. Remember that each employee at the shop speaks with many people a day, a lot of whom are new to firearms. Knowing and abiding by these unwritten rules will ensure a smooth, safe and respectful transaction.

I managed a gun shop in New Jersey, so I'll add:

1. Don't expect your cousin Tony to buy a gun for you because he has the permit.
2. Don't expect extra special treatment because you're a NJ Trooper.
3. If you are a cop, don't bring me gold plated Glocks, Desert Eagles, and Hi-Points week after week selling them for cash. I wasn't born yesterday.
4. Don't ask if it's actually legal to own what I'm selling.
5. Don't stand in front of me and tell me I'm a monster for selling guns and expect me to be polite and courteous as I escort your ass out the door.
6. Don't bring me an old duffle bag with a FA Colt 9mm Carbine and a bag full of 30 round mags and offer to sell it to me in the parking lot for $50.
7. Don't ask me to commit a felony for you, you won't be allowed back in the store.
8. Don't come in and lay out 100 dollar bills on the counter over the guns you want, and then call your mom in out of the car to buy them.
9. Don't assume I'm an idiot because I'm managing a gun shop, I'll beat your ass in Trivial Pursuit all day. lol

I don't know if you remember 911 Store on Hollywood Blvd close to Federal Hwy but it was right around the corner from me so I spent a ton of time and money there. walking distance from home. I saw stuff that got a couple people thrown out, almost tackled. Just basic safety stuff. Those guys had no fucks to give.

Apply this to gunshows!

I have had people rack slides on tied guns(when posted not to), disassemble firearms while I am distracted with other customers, move the safety on fresh coated AKs( not your cherry to break, dumbass), all because the firearm is within reach of the public.

Just because I brought it to sell at a show, it's not there for your entertainment or show & tell with your buddy.

I could easily go off on a rant, these things drive me crazy.

They all seem common sense to those educated in firearm safety. Although I have seen many of them broken in shops by people I thought would know better.

I agree for the most part but I often break the first rule. When I'm trying to decide between two firearms it's nice to have them side by side to compare sizes. Why is that considered bad form? I've never really questioned doing it

I didn't know they allowed guns in NJ.

But I can see it was a colorful experience-like most everything in that hell hole.

I agree, better than saying, may I see that one, and the other one again, uhhh, please can I see the first one again? I think that would irritate them quicker.

I hate hearing people try and BS others. There always seems to be some karate-kid-tactical-assault-ninja-warrior around who is sharing his complete horse shit story about fast roping into Nigeria and rescuing a damn princess.

Everyone hates that guy. Don't be that guy.

My only real gripe with customers is when you hang around giving bad info to people. Or recommend an old couple a KSG for their first home defense gun, or dragons breath as the best ammo... (Reaches over and slaps the offending person and sternly says "No... That was bad, and you should feel bad...")

I Gunsmith out of 2 different shops and number 4 and 8 kill me. I can not tell you how many times I have jacked a round out of a customer just checked empty gun. The haggling is ok but we can not compete with the Buds of the world. We work off a very small profit margin as it is but we are there for the customer and hope to be for a long time. If you figure shipping and transfer fee, we are not that far off from the Internet dealers. Keep the mom and pops open please.
