It’s easy. You just start and adjust feed/amperage until you get the proper result. Obviously use the correct rod or wire for what you’re welding.
The rod or wire that you use to weld is a grade or 2 up from what you’re welding.
Not much else to know besides gaining experience. Certain patterns work better on certain metals. O-pattern works good on aluminum, C-pattern on steel, figure 8 on stainless. You just follow the molten flow and direct and maintain it in the direction you need
Let me rephrase this. I need practice

So i suppose the best method of learning is buy a Miller and a bunch of scrap.
Just multiple small pieces of different metals and thickness and start practicing. Will need various rod/wire sizes and types depending on what you’re working with.
Welding is probably the easiest thing to do and it pays (or saves) a lot when you start doing large jobs.

Watch the cylinder bolt (the part that sticks out of the bottom of the cylinder window in the frame & serves to stop the cylinder at the right place) & cock the hammer. Make sure the bolt first is withdrawn into the frame, then snaps back up.

Also could be a bent crane.

But the first thing to try is a good cleaning. Old Colt lockworks are insanely complex & any trash, gunk or even unburnt powder can cause trouble.
